Did you know that a Christmas tree can go up in flames in under a minute? Protect your home and family from a potential holiday disaster by reading and following these safety tips.

  1. Make sure to water your real Christmas tree daily to keep it from drying out.
  2. Place your tree at least 3 feet away from any heat source, such as fireplaces or candles.
  3. Examine your Christmas lights properly. Do not use lights on your tree if they have frayed wires, loose connections, or look weathered.
  4. Make sure to use flame-retardant decorations on your tree. Check the manufacturer’s label to check that your lights meet proper safety standards.
  5. Make sure your smoke alarm is on and working properly.
  6. Get rid of your tree when the needles start falling. This means your tree is drying out, and is more likely to catch fire.
  7. Turn off your lights and blow out your candles before you go to bed or leave the house.
  8. Don’t overload your electrical outlet. Only use lights as directed. Use outdoor/indoor lights as specified.
  9. Make sure your tree isn’t blocking a fire exit.
  10. Make sure your home is covered! Read more about Homeowner’s Insurance with Archdeacon.
